Fetal Growth Scan

23-40 weeks

Also known as a "Wellbeing Scan", this scan aims to determine the growth and health of the fetus by examining the following:

  • The size of your baby's head, thigh bone and abdomen
  • The amount of fluid in the amniotic sac
  • Position and appearance of the placenta as well as the blood flow to the placenta
  • Position and movement of your baby

You will receive a full medical report summarizing the growth of your baby.

This scan takes up to 45 minutes and is typically only done in the NHS if there is a clinical reason for doing so.

If you have a multiple birth or complications, you may have multiple growth scans over the course of your pregnancy for closer monitoring.
